What kind of art medium is soft pastel?

Soft pastels are painting materials made by solidifying powdered pigments with a small amount of glue. They are characterized by beautiful colors, soft tints, and the ability to quickly copy, allowing you to paint as soon as you feel it.

What is the difference between soft pastels and oil pastels/crayons?

The difference is whether they contain oil components. Soft pastels do not contain any oil. Soft pastels have a gentle matte color, while oil pastels and crayons have a glossy, shiny color.

I am new to pastels.

Pastels are very easy to start with as long as you have pastels and paper. You can also use drawing paper. Pastels are not as easy to mix as other paints, so if you are new to pastels and are not sure if you will be able to continue, we recommend the Gondola Pastel 36 or 48 color sets. Of course, it’s better to have more colors since the more colors you have, the greater your range of expression becomes.

Do the pastel colors have names?

With the exception of Kyoto Color Pastels, each color has a color number. (For instance, 101, 213, 815, etc.).

I will lose track of the color numbers of the pastels as I use them...

If you paint the colors in the order they are placed on the color chart provided when you open the package, you will know the color number and it will help you when replenishing single colors.

How should I prepare to start painting?

It is advisable to keep your room and clothes clean and have a wet towel to wipe your hands. Wear a mask and refrain from eating or drinking during the painting.

What is a fixerchief?

It helps pastels to adhere more firmly to the screen. For pastel paintings, please use fixerchief for pastels.

My pastels are getting dirty after use.

Wipe the surface with a tissue and it will return to a clean state.

Can I use pastels in combination with other paints?

Since, it depends on the product, please try before use and use at your own risk.

How should I store pastels?

Please close the lid and keep the pastels out of direct light. If pastels are exposed to direct light for an extended period of time, they may fade.

How should I store pastel arts?

Pastels do not adhere well to a support (such as paper), and if you touch the surface of a pastel painting, the pastel will come off (even if you use a fixative to strengthen the fixing power, it is not perfect). Therefore, to prevent the screen from touching other objects, the painting should be covered with paper (paraffin paper and copy paper, etc., is also acceptable). Please refer to the "HOW TO USE" section of this website for more details.

Are there any precautions when framing?

Some framers use an anti-static spray to prevent pastels from sticking to the acrylic board.

I found some old pastels. Can I use them?

Even unused (unopened) products are easily affected by the storage environment. If the storage conditions are good, they can be used for more than 10 years. On the other hand, if the storage conditions (light, temperature, humidity) are poor, the product will deteriorate.

What should I do in case of accidental ingestion?

Softpastels do not contain toxic substances above the regulated level. A small amount of accidental ingestion is not a problem. First, rinse out the mouth and remove as much as possible, then check the situation and see a doctor if you feel something is wrong.

How do I remove pastels from my clothes?

First, do not rub the stained area, but tap it to remove as much of the powder as possible. Next, wash the stained area by dabbing it with soap and a toothbrush, and rinse with water. Stains from pastels on clothing are the result of the colored powder becoming entangled in the fibers. Also, pastels have very weak adhesive strength, so the stain will be removed little by little as the laundering is repeated.

Can I purchase pastels outside of Japan?

Depending on the area, we may be able to introduce you to a place to purchase pastels, so please contact us.
